At a time when people leave venue of concerts and shows disgruntled at being promised so much with little delivered, the i2x media crew, organizers of WordUp, seem to have made the reverse their own mantra. They deliver more than promised. WordUp Vol 8, the 2nd Anniversary edition of their flagship event which held on 16th of August 2014, indeed reiterated their claim that WordUp is the biggest spoken word event in the country and this was reflected in every area of the event from the quality of the venue and the quality and diversity of poetry on display.
For lovers of Spoken Word artistry who trooped into Quad T event centre at Gbagada, the venue of the event as from early afternoon, the event was one they were glad they didn’t miss as revealed in the smiles and grins on their faces at the end of the event.
Although the event started few minutes before the scheduled time due to logistic challenges, it was a roller coaster from the moment it started with the rendition of the National Anthem. Thereafter it was Spoken Word Artistry at its finest kicked off by opening act of the day, Osowe Gbenga, (a finalist at the 1st season of War of Words, a poetry slam organized by i2x media) and ended with a threesome performance led by one of Nigeria’s leading female spoken word artistes Atilola and two of her protégés, Jemimah and Titilayo.
The event showcased diversity of styles, performances and the highlights of the day were the performances by Lil Victor, a seven year old poet from Benin, a duet by the Graciano and Aquila, 1st and 2nd place winners at the last edition of War of Words, musical performances by female soul singers, Tobo-Rated and Aduke.
Poets on the stage that day included veterans such as Plumbline, Donna the Poet, Torpedo Mascaw, Enigmatic Olumide and other leading acts like Atilola, Archangel, SaintRhymes, D-Ray, I am Rage, Mayowa Agbetusin amongst others.
For lovers of poetry, WordUpVol8 will linger for long in memory and everyone looks forward to WordUpVol9.
