Wordaholics, a monthly open mic literary event, held it’s July 2018 edition at TEAMSWAG in Somolu, Lagos. The event which had a segment for open mic performances and a 2nd segment for a spoken word poetry slam contest, left jaws agape, eyes popping, ears itching for more.
This event that holds every second Saturday of the month commenced with the spoken word poetry open mic session anchored by the witty MC FreezinPaul, a poetry slam champion with multiple awards.
The open mic afternoon had the likes of CIA, Fathia, Chreezy, Opeoluwa Olatunbosun, Success Ebosetale aka Wordsmith, Poetic Josh and a number of other poets who had the heavens blaring with their amazing play on words, music, electrifying voice modulation among other “ARTOMIC” missiles falling sporadically… What a storm!
Ediri Agnes “Sissy” who is the CEO; Sissy Plans (an event management outfit based in Lagos Nigeria) anchored the spoken word slam segment, and with the same energy displayed during the open mic, the poets had the judges and audience pleasantly speechless by their performances. A member of the audience described Opeoluwa, the eventual 1st Runner-Up, as a poetess with hammers and caterpillars. So it was little wonder that she tied on the points with the other top two vibrant and articulate poets; De Wordsmith and Josh.
Guest Poets for the day, JYC and Cherry Entafield, thrilled the audience with their poetry performances, and this made one of the customers at the venue comment that he felt goose pimples all over from listening to JYC’s words.
In the closing performance of the day, BankHALL gave a wonderful account of his form of Yoruba poetry supported with talking drums. His vibrant display captivated a female member of the audience, Yewande Afonja, that she joined him on stage, while the audience sang and cheered along.
Special thanks to the Judges of the slam poetry segment – JYC, Cherry Entafield, Mr. Olumide Hollloway (the humble convener of one of Nigeria’s biggest poetry slam, the #WarOfWords), and Mr. Kayode Azeez (convener of Poetry Alive; a quarterly poetry, dance, music and painting concert held at different tertiary institutions around Lagos metropolis).
At the end of the slam poetry contest, Success Ebosetale aka De Wordsmith added Slam Champion to his name, winning the maiden edition of WORDAHOLICS SPOKEN WORD POETRY CONTEST, while Opeoluwa and Josh came 1st and 2nd Runner-Up respectively. The winner and 1st runner up got cash prizes and a book titled “Scripture” by Jide Badmus
Wordaholics open mic events is being held in bars and restaurants around Lagos metropolis and at the prestigious University of Benin. The convener, Ayokunle Komolafe of Komsons Studios (who is also the creator of Vivid Verses, a poetry promotion outfit) said his desire is to have every member of the public appreciate poetry and other literary works. He also stated that it will appreciated if more recreational outlets are willing to open their doors to these kinds of initiative, as it will go a long way in promoting the arts and also contribute to Nation building.
The next edition holds on Saturday August 11, 2018 by 12 noon. Below are pictures from the event:
