Wordaholics, a monthly open mic literary event’s October 2018 (Independence edition) held at TEAMSWAG in Somolu began with a resounding bang and ended with a deafening ‘Waawu’. Each person out of breath and thankful for the amazing ride, Joyous steps, Lightened hearts, and Blinding smiles.

This event that holds every second Saturday of the month event, commenced by 12:30 pm with the open mic session and this was anchored by the awesome Poet/MC/Award-winner FreezinPaul who blessed a few of the audience with recharge cards in a game called ‘Fastest Fingers’. This edition was also used to commemorate the 58th independence anniversary of Nigeria with the theme “The Freedom Song”.

The open mic had about 20 acts including Godwin who came from Benin Republic to attend the event (we are international now). David Ikomu, known by his pseudonym — KCPwesh who engaged the minds of the audience with his poem on Mad Men. Also present was I Am Emmanuel with his unwavering energy, Titi Matthews, Oludasa Olawale, Penawd, Tiwistar, Mahi, Hossein D Poet, among others. And lastly, a romantic poem that warmed the hearts of the audience, a duet by Balogun Yusuf Gemini and Fatihah.

The slam was anchored by the beautiful CEO of Sissy Plans (an event management outfit based in Lagos, Nigeria), Ediri Agnes “Sissy” who came with her handsome son who has the dance steps of a young legend.

The slam consisted of three rounds and we had Balogun Yusuf Gemini (a 17 year old poet and spoken word artiste, who is also a past winner) as the sacrificial poet. Only 10 poets registered for the slam so they all went through to the second round which was a face off where the top five were pitted against the other five. There were a couple of ties but only 5 went on to the last round.

Guest Poet for the day was Evelyn D’ Poet who graced us with her presence despite her bottle necked schedule and inescapable Lagos traffic. She also gifted the audience with pepper soup. A unique style of performing poetry and serenading us with old school songs, she even wrote a poem for the area (Somolu) including the audience and bar patrons in her performances. Joining her as judges were Mr Soonest Nathaniel (guest poet for the August edition), Mr Clemency Green (an award-winning poet and a doctor), Mr Ayokunle Komolafe (founder of Komsons Studios) and Mr. Isreal Light as the time keeper.

The event kept all the persons in the audience on their feet and left them with enlightening notes.

Concluding the event with a flourish was Fatihah who blessed the audience with her beautiful voice and sang a couple of songs and BankHALL a performer whose performance was scintillating, a cultural poet who has mastered the art of drums and infusion of it into his poetry, also featuring Ayomide Fasedu (@art_yomide) a chanter whose voice touches our very soul and makes us breathe easy.

In all, Titi Matthews (winner of AskIfa September edition Slam Poetry Competition) walked home with a cheque and a book (In the Name of Our Father by  Olukorede Yishau) presented to the winner by the guest poet, Miss Evelyn Osagie. The 1st runner up, Oludasa Olawale. 2nd runner up, KCPwesh and I am Emmanuel as 3rd runner up also received a book each.

Wordaholics open mic events is being held in bars and restaurants around Lagos metropolis and at the prestigious University of Benin.
