SOS POETRY SLAM 1.0 saw young poets from different parts of the country gather in Oshodi, Lagos-Nigeria on Saturday, August 20, 2016. The poets came to do what they love best – speak words passionately, to entertain, chastise and motivate. The open sky atmosphere was that of a cool breezy evening with close to 100 persons in attendance.
The slam started with an opening performance by one of the slam organizers, Olayinka Samson Aremu ‘PoeTHICK Samurai’, after which the slam officially commenced with the introduction of rules guiding the competition by the Master of Ceremony, Prestige Ifeanyi Bernard, who is a slam champion.
A total of fourteen (14) poets competed in the first round, with 9 qualifying to the 2nd Round, and 5 made it into the 3rd and final round.
At the end of each Round, one of the 3 judges performed; to provide the competitors an opportunity to learn and perfect the art of spoken word poetry, seeing some of their mentors on stage.
Paul Word, the Winner of War Of Words Season 4 Slam Poetry Competition (2014), added flavor to the historic event by reciting few lines from his award winning “SOS” poem, at the end of the Round 3. After which, the winners were announced by a veteran Poet/Spoken Word Artiste, Soonest Ifeanyichukwu Nathaniel.
