What is Spoken Word Poetry?
Spoken word is a performance, an oral art that focuses on the aesthetics of word play, intonation and voice inflection. It includes any kind of poetry recited aloud like hip hop, jazz, comedy, prose monologues etc.
It is a globally acclaimed art in the US (poetry slams), Zimbabwe (Harare International festival of Arts), Namibia, South Africa, Ghana (Ehalakasa Slam Festival), UK, Australia (Poetry Slam Competition), France, UAE (Prince of Poets and Millionaire Poet Competitions) etc.

Spoken Word Poetry in Nigeria
In Abuja, we have a vibrant poetry scene led by Dike Chukwumerije and Bashiru Amuneni. There are more 300 active poets in Abuja as reflected in their poetry events and Abuja serves as a major hub for poets in the Northern States. As a stand alone, Jos has an active poetry scene of about 200 active poets.
In Benin, specifically in University of Benin, we have over 100 active poets, while in Port Harcourt, Bayelsa and Calabar have an aggregate of about 300 active poets.
As a major commercial hub, Lagos have over 400 active poets and when combined with States in the South West, the aggregate number is over 1,000.
