Please introduce yourself, name, where are you from, educational background, occupation and hobbies.

My name is Benny Temitope Akinyemi-Finisher. Stage name is Benny Finisher. A native of Ogun State, Nigeria. I love listening to movie soundtracks and watching babies grow.

_MG_5437-EditWhat is Poetry and who is a poet? Why do you consider yourself as a poet?

Poetry is to the Poet what he or she chooses to define it as. To me it is an expression of thoughts and feelings in an understandable way (at least to your target audience). It can either be written or performed. Whoever does this and is understood by his target audience can be termed a Poet.

What inspired you to start writing poetry and when did you first perform poetry? How did your first poetry performance go?

I started writing when I discovered I had a voice in me the needs to be heard. Started out writing songs, then poems till I found the art of spoken word. My first time (2009) was like every first time; butterflies and all. Never stopped since then.

Who are your favorite poets that you like to read or watch often, name them and why you like them ?

I don’t have favorite Poets. Just have people who I’m inspired by. The likes of ‘Wole Soyinka, Akinwunmi Ishola, Fela Kuti, King Solomon, Michael Jackson,…the list goes on. They’ve got originality and truth in words.benny f 2

They say that to see the world with complete honesty one should look to comedians, artists and poets, what do you think emerges naturally from your work?

Truth, Reality and Strength.

All poets have several words that come up over and over again, words or sentences that they just can’t help but use in their work. What are 3 of your absolute favorite words?

*Smiles* “Fine wine”. “They say”.

What style of poetry do you prefer? ( Freestyle, Rhyming, Prose).

My style is a combination of the known style and the yet -to -be -discovered.

Do you usually have a topic in your head before you write your poem or you just write as it comes? and tell us why you adopt such writing technique?

It comes sometimes from movie soundtracks. Other times, from a popular saying, cliché or songs. Then I look into my environment, ’cos the words are there. Both truth and lie. My part is to choose.

What is the difference between Performance Poetry and Spoken Word? How would you classify yourself and why?

Performance poetry has structure and lay down rules in a way. Spoken word artists are rule breakers (not rebels). I’m a wordsmith.

benny fWhat have you gained from being a spoken word poet? Any award, recognition etc. What is the biggest stage you have performed poetry on till date?

One major gain I’ve found in this art of mine is FREEDOM. The biggest audience I’ve performed before was almost 2000.

Poets are often said to be eccentric, and I support that..please end this interview by creating 2 sentences poetic, strange or quietly profound..your choice.

“They say, water no get enemy. I say whose friend is hurricane, tsunami?”

Any other information you want to share (some personal stuff that we don’t know about).

You don’t know the number of locks on my head. I know. Don’t ask me.benny f 3
